Hush @ The Portsmouth Museum of Art (USA) and LeBasse Projects (LA) present:
SugiPOP!: The Influence of Anime and Manga on Contemporary Art’ opens on October 13th at the Portsmouth Museum of Art.
The show is a collaborative effort, co-curated by Beau Basse of LeBasse Projects in Los Angeles and Katherine Doyle of the Portsmouth Museum of Art. It features the work of approximately 30 artists tracing the origination's of manga, the rise of Japanese Contemporary Art and into how the art forms have influenced artists around the world.
The exhibition features an international roster of artists including Japanese masters Hokusai and Kuniyoshi in a display of original Edo period woodblock prints.
The exhibit also features Japanese Contemporary artists Takashi Murakami, Yos**tomo Nara, Yos**taka Amano, Mr., Ai Yamaguchi, Junko Mizuno and Hisashi Tenmyouya.
International artists contributing to the exhibit include KAWS, Gary Baseman, Hush, Morgan Slade, Edwin Ushiro, Luke Chueh, Simone Legno, Natalia Fabia, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Yumiko Kayukawa, Seonna Hong, Andrew Hem, Mike Shinoda, Melissa Haslam, Audrey Kawasaki, Yoskay Yamamoto and more. Finally the exhibition includes original cels from some of the most significant anime films ever made, including Cowboy Bebop and Princess Mononoke.
The Street Art Stencil Book is a pure celebration of the art of the stencil. It is a book of stencils that can be used and treasured or just simply be an inspiration to others to create. The 20 stencils featured, printed on perforated card stock so that they can be torn out and used, have been created by a list of international artists encompassing the contemporary street art scene, from the masters to the new kids on the block. Each artist has created an in-situ photograph to accompany their stencil, showing how they would use it, along with other imagery. There is also a short biography for each artist.
Hush's work has been described as a sensory assault of shape, color, and character. Inspired by the portrayal of the female form in art, the artist builds up and tears down layers of paint and images as he works, "letting the canvas and marks take their own path." The result is an enigmatic synthesis of anime, pop-infused imagery and graffiti that exposes the conflict between power and decay, innocence and sexuality, and the fusion of Eastern and Western culture.
Hush continues to evolve his style with this latest batch of pieces, which merges his early anime and pop-art influenced graffiti technique with an exploration of Romanesque iconographic imagery. The new works are bigger, deeper and richer than anything he has produced to date.
About the Artist:
Hush is stimulated, influenced and driven by his cross cultural experiences. Having originally trained as a graphic designer and illustrator at Newcastle School of Art and Design, his work has taken him across Asia and Europe, whilst simultaneously developing his prominence as a contemporary artist. Hush now resides in the UK painting in his studio daily.
